The fate of AGT: Extreme has been determined for the upcoming 2022-2023 season. NBC recently revealed that the America’s Got Talent spin off is currently on hold with no plan for its return. This series has not been cancelled entirely at this time.

On March 14, the first season of AGT: Extreme came to an end with the crowning of Alfredo Silva’s Cage Riders. Since the series concluded, fans have wondered whether it will return or not. During NBC‘s recent unscripted line up unveiling, sources at the network confirmed that they currently have no plan to bring the series back for another season. While the series has yet to be cancelled completely, this isn’t a good sign.

It seems like the chance of AGT: Extreme coming back to NBC next year is extremely slim. There are multiple other unscripted series that took priority over the unsuccessful spin off at the NBC Upfront presentation. The network was clearly expecting success similar to AGT: The Champions, but fell far from it due to multiple factors.

NBC Puts AGT: Extreme on an Indefinite Hold

AGT: Extreme had a bit of a rocky path since it began filming. In fall 2021, it quickly made headlines due to an on set accident. Escape artist, Jonathan Goodwin, suffered multiple injuries in a life changing accident. To this day, he remains paralyzed with a T11 spinal cord injury. The series paused production soon after the accident, but resumed filming a few months later to meet their late February deadline.

AGT: Extreme premiered on NBC on February 21, 2022 and was quickly met with criticism. The format of the spin off series differed from the original, featuring longer auditions and much more banter between judges and contestants. Cast of the spin off series featured Simon Cowell, WWE veteran Nikki Bella, X Games Medalist Travis Pastrana, and beloved AGT host Terry Crews.

The series itself was also wildly short with only four episodes. Their short format and lack of viewership were ultimately the biggest problem for the spin off. Even though America’s Got Talent is a hit on NBC, the spin off brought in 3.558 million average viewers. To compare, season 16 of the original series brought in 6.600 million average viewers.

Even though AGT: Extreme is not being renewed at this time, fans of the series as a whole are looking forward to AGT season 17. The original series premieres on NBC on May 31 from 8 to 10 p.m. ET.
