Chappell Roan recently shared her experience auditioning for The Voice when she was just 15 years old. Not only was she rejected, but she apparently didn’t receive a particularly warm welcome from the producer who heard her sing.

Chappell Roan Recalls Auditioning for The Voice

Roan told W magazine that she auditioned for the singing competition when she was 15 years old, performing “Stay” by Rihanna. She had apparently considered singing “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars and switching the lyrics to be from a female point of view. But Roan said “every girl” was doing that.

“When I did the Voice audition, the producer or whoever the f*ck was watching did not even look up from his phone,” Roan recalled. “He was like, ‘Okay, next.’ And I went up there and sang a cappella, the scariest thing ever. He never really looked at me.”

Roan had previously tried out for America’s Got Talent when she was 13, singing “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. She flew to Austin, Texas, and “waited in line with thousands of people at 4 a.m.,” but the show didn’t take her.

The 27-year-old pop star also talked about auditioning for The Voice during a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, saying, “I didn’t make it on the show, obviously. Thank God!”

Other Stars Were Rejected by Talented Shows

Roan isn’t the only popular artist who auditioned for a TV talent show and was rejected. For example, country star Maren Morris has been open about the fact that she was turned away by American Idol, The Voice, and America’s Got Talent before making it big.

Even Camila Cabello, who served as a coach on The Voice, unsuccessfully auditioned for the show before she was famous. She later competed on The X Factor, where the girl group Fifth Harmony was formed, so it all worked out for the best.

Country singer Luke Combs also auditioned for The Voice, but said he was told by producers that he was “too boring to be on television.” Meanwhile, Simon Cowell called Tori Kelly’s voice “almost annoying” when she auditioned for American Idol.

It just goes to show that these competition shows don’t always get it right, which is why it’s so important for aspiring musicians to keep trying.
