America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal is looking back at her time on the series, admitting that she went into her audition with complete spontaneity. Now at 21 years old, VanderWaal is revealing the details behind her Golden Buzzer audition.
Grace VanderWaal Admits Her AGT Audition Was Spontaneous
On a recent episode of The Zach Sang show, VanderWaal looked back at America’s Got Talent. While talking to the host, she admitted that she “wasn’t a singer” before the show. Instead of wanting to audition, she decided to do it because her mom “thought it would be a fun experience to sit in a super long line.”
“That’s how I went on…” VanderWaal said. “Then I won… Obviously like that hit my family by storm, no one in a million years..”
Apparently, VanderWaal didn’t have anyone rooting for her when she went on the show and the song was just a jingle she wrote. The singer even claims that her winning the series was “universe stuff” since she loves everything related to music, but wouldn’t have been able to do it without the platform she was given.
“I have this little jingle I wrote yesterday, it’s ‘I Don’t Know My Name’ and then I sang that and then I don’t know the whole thing happened…” she said. “I look back and I’m like how was this even real, it is really? People don’t even know the tip of the iceberg of the reality, it was crazy, it was a time.”
VanderWaal then went on to mention that she was inspired by her family’s au pair who played Ukulele. Her parents originally said no to buying the instrument, so VanderWaal used a check from her grandma to buy it. When asked about how she learned to play, VanderWaal admitted it’s an easy instrument and that’s why she liked it.
“It’s not really that impressive,” she said. “Which is what I loved about it, you can pick it up and in about three hours you can probably play a simple song with it and get that gratification”
Fans Don’t Believe VanderWaal’s Story
Since the clip of VanderWaal on Zach Sang’s show went viral, fans of America’s Got Talent are weighing in on it. Many believe that VanderWaal is making up the story.
“why is she trying to deny she was actually a creative child and her parents acknowledged that and recognized her talent? She trynna act nonchalant,” a fan commented.
While on the other hand, some people were commenting that instead this is talking about how the show creates a narrative.
“Yalllllllll I’m pretty sure it’s a lot more likely that AGT over edited everything to tell a certain marketable story,” another fan commented. “Calling people liars instead of the corporation is wild.”
Now, some fans feel deceived admitting that this interview changed their perspective on the AGT winner. Others claim that her energy in this interview doesn’t match her audition.
“Going back and watching her audition doesn’t match this but go off,” another fan commented.
