MTV Talent Show ‘Becoming a Popstar’ Crowns a Season 1 Winner, Will the Show Return?
Reading Time: 2 minutes
MTV’s new talent show Becoming a Popstar has already crowned its Season 1 winner after five weeks of competition. The series, which is focused on TikTok artists, named Samy Hawk the first-ever recipient of the $100,000 prize.
‘Making a Popstar’ Crowns Season 1 Winner
Making a Popstar challenged contestants to create original songs and perform them in one-minute videos for TikTok. Each week revolved around a specific theme. The show was judged by Joe Jonas, Becky G, and Sean Bankhead.
Three contestants made it to the finale — KB the Singer, Amira Unplugged, and Samy Hawk. The final two were Amira and Samy, and the winner was announced to be Samy. In addition to the $100,000 prize, he’ll also star in a Pepsi commercial to air during the VMAs.
Samy is a Venezuelan artist who mixed Spanish and English in his songs for the show. When he was announced as the winner, he broke down in tears. He dedicated the win to his late father, saying, “How I went from the darkest moment of my life to the most beautiful day. All of my life makes sense tonight.”
Was the New Show Popular with Viewers?
Since Becoming a Popstar just finished its first season on MTV, you might be wondering how popular it was among viewers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have such a good score on IMDb. Twelve users have given the show an average of 4.2 stars out of 10.
There are no written reviews yet, so we don’t know exactly why so many users gave the show a low score. As for social media, the show gained a TikTok following of 29,000 people, with almost 1 million likes. It’s much less popular on Instagram and Twitter, but that might be due to the show’s focus. Tweets about the season finale seemed positive, although there weren’t that many.
Of course, the show aired on a cable network and had a limited run, so it makes sense that it wouldn’t be as popular as, say, The Voice. But was the interest enough to get another season? We’ll have to wait and see.
