Each week, artists will create original songs with an accompanying one-minute music video that will air on TikTok. This contest isn’t just about their talent, it’s also about the way they can empress themselves authentically online and engage on the platform.
Each episode will have a theme based on aspect of the app. For example, a week themed ‘Duets’ will feature artists paired together to create an original song and visual performance. They will showcase the influence and impact of culture on the platform. After each episode, fans can search #MTVPopstar on TikTok to vote for their favorite artist. Voting will remain open for 48 hours after the episode airs.
Artists will be up for elimination taking place each episode. The series will dwindle down until two final artists are left. They will battle it out head-to-head in the finale special. The one winner will walk away as a popstar with their own Pepsi commercial set to premiere during the MTV Video Music Awards which typically occurs in September. On top of the commercial, Pepsi will provide funding and resources to support the winner’s career ambitions.
Becoming A Popstar premieres March 24 at 10/9c on MTV. The series will air for five weeks on thursday nights. MTV will have a pre-show TikTok live stream each week to announce the winner of the previous week.
