In a press release, Hager’s new track is described as “a rom-com in a song.” The cover art reflects that, as Hager appears in a recreation of the poster for the movie Pretty Woman, showing the title “Two Step” in large pink letters.
In the song’s lyrics, Hager sings that he’s “picturing a future with a girl I’ve never met.” The track has an uptempo style and a catchy tune that’s sure to make fans want to dance along. One commenter wrote on YouTube, “Poppy bop love it can’t stop.”
“I wrote ‘Two Step’ with Lucky West, and we really just tried to have as much fun as possible throughout the song,” Hager said in a statement. “On its surface, it’s a fun happy-go-lucky love song, but the lyrics are more of a satirical observation of the male fantasy, and what love is expected to feel like because of its portrayal in the media we consume.”

This Is Hager’s Second Single of 2023
“Two Step” is the second single Hager has released so far this year. In January, he debuted “Caroline,” which is about the aftermath of a one-night stand as the narrator tries to remember the name of the woman he was with.
At the time, Hager said of his songwriting process, “Whenever I write I try to play with the relationship between comedy and tragedy and figure out the best balance for each song.”
Last year, the singer reached the Top 5 of American Idol Season 20. As part of his time on the show, Hager released an original single called “Hearts Align,” which he later performed as the winner of Live with Kelly and Ryan‘s Encore contest.
