Following Liam Payne’s death in October, his One Direction bandmates have reportedly gotten closer than they’ve been in quite some time. A source said that Payne’s sudden death was a “wake-up call” for them.
Did Liam Payne’s Death Bring One Direction Closer?
A source told Us Weekly that before Payne’s death, the former members of One Direction “kept in touch sporadically but didn’t have close friendships at all.” However, they added that his death “brought them back together.”
“They’re all still mourning but are checking in on each other and feel closer than they have in years,” the source said of the relationship between Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik.
The four remaining members of the group attended Payne’s funeral in England last month. They also released a joint statement reacting to Payne’s death, saying they were “completely devastated” by the loss.
Payne died in October at the age of 31 after falling off a balcony at a hotel in Argentina. Three people were arrested in connection with his death, including an alleged drug dealer. New reports have suggested that Payne was trying to escape his hotel room when he fell.

Will the Group Pay Tribute to Payne?
The source told Us Weekly that the group had been “in talks to do one last reunion show” before Payne’s death. It may be some time before we see something like that, but it’s apparently still in the cards.
“The guys would love to do a tribute to Liam. They’re all so devastated right now they can’t even think about that as a legitimate project, but it has been discussed,” the source shared. “Liam’s death has caused the guys immense heartbreak.”
The last time the group performed together with the original five members was in 2015, before Malik chose to leave. The remaining four members released the album Made in the A.M. before taking an indefinite hiatus in 2016 and going on to solo careers.
