‘American Idol’ Contestant Sara Beth Calls Katy Perry’s Comments ‘Hurtful’

American Idol Season 21 contestant Sara Beth has responded to Katy Perry’s controversial comments during her audition. Fans accused Perry of bullying and mom shaming the singer. Sara Beth admitted that Perry’s words were “hurtful.”

When Sara Beth told the judges that she was a mom of three at the age of 25, Perry reacted with shock. Sara Beth joked, “If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m gonna pass out.” Perry responded, “Honey, you been laying on the table too much.”
Fans online took issue with this comment, as well as Perry’s general attitude toward Sara Beth throughout the audition. She grilled the singer about whether American Idol is her dream, telling her she “might need to leave” and make room for other singers.
Sara Beth took to TikTok to respond to the controversy, admitting that Perry’s joke “wasn’t super kind.” She added, “It was embarrassing to have that on TV, and it was hurtful, and that’s that.”
“But I did want to take this opportunity to just say that I think women supporting women and uplifting other women is so cool, and I think that mom shaming is super lame,” Sara Beth shared. “And I think that it’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman.”

Sara Beth Teased That She’s Releasing New Music
“Thanks for the love, guys,” Sara Beth said at the end of her video. “I’m putting out music now, I guess. And yeah, if you wanna listen. Bye.”
The singer frequently shares both covers and original songs on her TikTok account, where she has over 130,000 followers. She also recently released the demo for a song called “Last October” for fans to stream on Spotify.
As for her future on American Idol, Sara Beth earned two “yes” votes from the judges to earn a Golden Ticket to Hollywood Week. We’ll just have to wait and see how far she makes it in the competition.
