So You Think You Can Dance once again angered fans this week following a controversial elimination in Season 17. Some viewers believe that if the at-home audience had been able to vote, the results would have been much different.

So You Think You Can Dance Elimination Angers Fans

During Wednesday night’s show, the dancers were paired up with new partners. Jordan Betscher was paired with Beau Harmon for the Viennese Waltz. However, during rehearsals, Jordan was sick and had to take time away.

Beau ended up rehearsing with Koine Iwasaki, who competed in Season 14. Jordan eventually rejoined Beau to prepare for the dance. They only had three hours to rehearse together, but you’d never know it from their graceful performance.

Despite her impressive showing, Jordan was in the bottom four and ended up being eliminated, along with Thiago Pacheco. This angered fans on Twitter, who thought Jordan’s performance earned her a spot in the next round.

Some fans pointed to this season’s new format, in which the in-studio audience and judges decide who should move on rather than the audience at home. One Twitter user wrote that if viewers had been able to vote, “these results would be so different.”

This Season of the Show Hasn’t Gone Smoothly

Season 17 of So You Think You Can Dance has been pretty rocky so far. In addition to the new voting format, the judging panel has also had a shake-up. The show introduced three new judges this season — JoJo Siwa, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, and Matthew Morrison.

After filming four episodes, Morrison left the show due to not following production protocols. He later admitted that he sent a direct message to a contestant on the show, although he denied reports that it was fliratious. Morrison was replaced by new judge Leah Remini.

Siwa has also faced some negativity from fans for her role on the judging panel. She recently defended her credentials, saying, “Am I the smartest dancer in the world? By no means. Am I the most knowledgeable dancer in the world? By no means. But I am smart enough to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance, absolutely.”

The judges truly got it wrong on both counts – Jordan AND Thiago. In Jordan’s case, Alexis wasn’t bad but wasn’t all that memorable. Jordan, on the other hand, was brilliant, and actually was a front-runner to win the whole thing. She’s the whole package. This was truly a travesty, and simply shows the lack of experience on the judging panel. As far as Thiago’s case, Carter was actually bad. He’s a decent dancer, but clearly can’t get out of the ballroom style. There was no comparison between the two. Thiago was by far much more impressive.

My biggest beef is that Thiago was sent home. I usually finish watching an episode of SYTYCD & pick out one dance to watch again & again — a Thiago’s Broadway homage is killer!!!

I don’t understand how the judges eliminated Thiago. Between the two, I would have eliminated the other one. How can they say he didn’t connect. In fact, I am surprised that he ended up in bottom 2. I think another pairing really should have been there (and BOTH of them eliminated because Jordan shouldn’t have gone either) but the judges love that male dancer even though for me he doesn’t connect at all and their comments influence the audience. Thiago looked at the camera. He made facial expressions that brought me in. (see the moment he returns to the stairs… Read more »

Beau should have never made it past the choreography award! I don’t understand how a dancer like him with no technical ability! Thiago and Carter have won national titles (just last year) and are fantastic! Thiago was astronomically better than Beau or Waverley and should have never even ended up in the bottom two. Sytycd really needs to figure out a better format that actually produces fair results.

I am completely disappointed with this season. The contestants are FAR below the competence of previous seasons and the judges trying to convince us otherwise is insulting. I have watched this series since the beginning and was excited that it was returning… not so excited any longer!

I think Thiago was the most talented male dancer on the show! I blame the choreographers for lame routines. When you have a dancer like Thiago Who is capable of doing so many complex movements in yet and some routines there was none of that! And yet the choreographers would get compliments. this season has been a tremendous disappointment! There has been no one to critique their complex technical routines! Bring back Nigel! He had personality and he knew his stuff! The only judge that can stay is twitch but everyone else needs to go. I guess the show is… Read more »

We have watched this show since the beginning, and are excited this year that Twitch is a judge. However, the new blond judge is grating on our nerves. Won’t be watching next season
