Group Performance

The night kicked off with a group performance featuring all four artists singing tonight. It was a fun song choice and we even got to see the Peacock’s signature slide onto his knees. As the judges said, the Monster and Peacock really stole the show here. But what a way to start the show!

The Bee

Clues: The Bee says she’s been performing for a long time, singing since the 1950’s. She talks about how her mom first gave her an idea to form a group at a birthday party when she was 8 years old. The Bee says “it was always in the cards.” They then got a record contract and her career has been “all peaches and marmalade ever since.” The shot then shows a plate full of waffles. She says singing all these songs makes her feel like “I’m every bee. It’s all in me!” For her physical clue, the Bee brought out bakeware, saying it’s her second favorite thing to do.

Performance: The Bee sang “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus for her third time on stage. Her voice really shined here! She was pitch perfect and put her own spin on it. The fun of this show has really been hearing these experienced singers cover unexpected songs. Plus that note at the end really sealed the deal! The Bee is here to win.

Judges’ Guesses: Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle

The Peacock

Clues: To start, the Peacock says that being on the stage in a mask is very hard and very lonely. The clues show him sitting in a bar with poker chips and a hat on the counter. He says people always want to chat with him and this experience is like he “vanished into thin air.” By day, he performs as his 176 pound real self. The Peacock is seen waving a rainbow flag inside his cape. But by night, he rides into the competition ready for battle. His revealing item was a blonde wig. He says, “Because of this wig, I was thrown in jail.”

Performance: The Peacock slowed it down this week, singing “All of Me” by John Legend. He brought the showmanship as usual and had solid vocals! Nothing compares to John for me but the Peacock can definitely sing. And it’s clear to see this isn’t his first time on stage.

Judges’ Guesses: Shaun Cassidy, Donny Osmond, Neil Patrick Harris, Wayne Brady, Michael Bolton

The Raven

Clues: The Raven says that being under the mask has challenged her to go against all her basic instincts. This is especially true because she made a career of talking to people! Looking back on her life, she now has a “bird’s eye view,” from death to love to birth. She is seen holding a clock that says 11:11. Her greatest joy is being a mother. “You might say that’s just me…” alludes to her costume as a Raven. When the time came, the Raven’s revealing item was an Emmy.

Performance: For the Raven’s third performance, she sang “Brave” by Sara Bareilles. This was another okay performance from her, but most of it sounded more spoken than sung. She hit the notes for the most part though. Her tone is just very nasal, so it’s not as easy to listen to, especially compared to the other singers in this group.

Judges’ Guesses: Raven Simone, Sara Gilbert, Sheryl Underwood, Starr Jones

The Monster

Clues: The Monster said he’s had his share of dark days but he’s “fought his demons.” He’s discovered the little teddy bear he is at heart. At this point, he’s sitting at a bar, while a bartender wearing a top hat dances He is then shown throwing money and breaking it down dancing in front of a video game “LEVEL COMPLETED” graphic. The Monster then says he’ll “swing back.” The video ends with “GAME OVER” text taking over the screen. After his performance, the Monster’s revealing item was a headset. He said, “I make my best calls on this headset.”

Performance: The Monster closed the night by singing “American Woman” by Lenny Kravitz. This was such an awesome performance! We had seen it teased in promos for the season but it was even better than expected. The Monster is the one singer in this competition who constantly surprises me. I’m always most excited to see what he’s going to do! This song choice and his dancing proves exactly why.

Judges’ Guesses: Sugar Ray Leonard, David Alan Grier, Tommy Davidson, Lil Rel

A High Flying Reveal

The audience and judges voted for the singers they want to keep around. After everything was calculated together, the Raven was chosen to be unmasked. The judges put in their final guesses at that point.

At the end of it all, the Raven was revealed to be…talk show host Ricki Lake! Ricki is also an actress and producer. She is best known for her lead role in the 1988 film Hairspray!

The competition is really heating up now. Tune in to The Masked Singer again next week when all six remaining singers join together!
