American Idol Season 18 winner Just Sam (aka Samantha Diaz) recently shared on social media that they’re pregnant with their first child. They’ve been posting updates about the pregnancy on Instagram, revealing that they’re expecting a boy.

Diaz announced their pregnancy in an Instagram post showing a sonogram, two positive pregnancy tests, and a selfie of their baby bump. The 26-year-old wrote that they had “made it past viability week after years of trying.”
“I was told at just 20 years old that I may not be able to carry children of my own or that I may have to try IVF in order to have a successful pregnancy/birth,” Diaz wrote. “The past couple of years , I have been trying on and off and let me tell you … I was really starting to lose hope.”
About a week later, Diaz shared the news that they’re expecting a baby boy. The singer linked to an Amazon registry in their Instagram bio. It’s listed as belonging to “Samantha D and Heather C,” although Diaz didn’t mention a partner in their announcement. The baby’s arrival date is listed as August 31.

Fans React to the Singer’s News
A fan recently posted the news of Diaz’s pregnancy on the American Idol subreddit, prompting reactions from other users. The top comment calls the singer’s situation “kind of concerning given the financial and mental health (and physical health?) struggles” they’ve faced.
Diaz was open about how they struggled financially after winning American Idol in 2020, as they returned to busking in the subway to earn money. They also experienced health issues that required hospitalization in 2022. In 2023, Diaz shared that they had been diagnosed with PTSD.
Another Reddit user wrote that they hoped Diaz has since resolved their “financial instability issues.” Others wondered about the baby’s paternity, with one fan pointing out that Diaz came out as gay shortly after their Idol win. They speculated that Diaz might have used a sperm donor.
