The show that created some of the world’s biggest names is officially back. Star Search has officially been rebooted on streaming platform, Netflix. The show is set to air on January 13, 2026.
Star Search Finds New Home on Streaming
Fans of reality competition shows can officially begin getting excited about the return of star creator, Star Search. For those who may not have witnessed it, the original Star Search aired from 1983 to 1995 hosted by Ed McMahon, and created by Al Masini. The show was then set to relaunch in 2003 to 2004 by 2929 Entertainment, LLC. Now, the series has found its home on Netflix.
Categories of talents typically varied from season to season, but generally included ten types. Female singer, male singer, junior singer, teen singer, group vocal, dance, junior dance, teen dance, spokesmodel, and comedy.
Contestants first appeared in the audition round, where they auditioned for their category. Then, two contestants would compete head to head.
All of the acts were judges by four judges, who were to give the performance a score out of five stars. The host would then reveal the winner of the match. Contestants must win several shows in a row to be able to enter the next round of the competition. Typically, they’d win three or four head to head battles.
From there, two semifinal shows would take place. Eventually, the championship show would determine the winner. In the Championship, winners of each category won $100,000 with no guaranteed recording contract. It is currently unknown how Netflix will change the format for the show’s reboot.
Who Was Discovered on Star Search?
It’s crazy to think that many of today’s biggest stars came from a show that is no longer on air. Given the variety of categories on the show, multiple A list celebrities were created from this competition.
Some of the examples used in Netflix’s promotional video included, Martin Lawrence, Usher, Alanis Morissette, Adam Sandler, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Beyonce. The list continued on with Justin Timberlake, Kevin James, Conan O’Brien, Norm Macdonald, Dave Chappelle, Backstreet Boys, and Kelly Rowland.
Star Search on Netflix premieres on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. As of right now, confirmed cast includes host Anthony Anderson. The show’s showrunners include Jason Raff (who left America’s Got Talent in 2024) and David Friedman (Bring the Funny).
