Fresh off of her collab with Suga from BTS on the song “Eight,” singer IU has been thrust into the spotlight. And although this singer has experienced a multitude of successes, she has not always had an easy life. From growing up with financial struggles to struggling with an eating disorder, IU truly is an inspiration to many.
“Eight” is the perfect blend of pop and rap. Suga not only rapped on the song but also produced it. The video features 2D animation and stunning images. IU and Suga worked together on the composition and the lyrics of the song.
IU Opened up About Her Eating Disorder In 2014
On an episode of SBS’ “Healing Camp,” a show where celebrities open up about issues that they have struggled with, IU spoke about her struggles with bulimia. “It was an uneasy time. My heart felt empty, and I tried to fill the void with food. However, instead of feeling better, I became anxious and felt like I was lacking,” she said. She also said that she would eat until she threw up but she has since received treatment for it. Her insecurities about her appearance and her weight were not the only things she was struggling with mentally. IU said that sometimes she felt overrated and undeserving of the positive reviews that her music receives.

IU is completely deserving of all the praise she receives. She previously had a ton of success with her song “Good Day” which was ranked number one on Billboard magazine’s 100 Greatest K-Pop Songs of the 2010s. IU is one of the best-selling solo artists in South Korean history. She has also been filming the movie Dream alongside Park Seo-Joon. Not to mention that “Eight” has achieved worldwide success. It reached 55 #1’s on iTunes worldwide. She is now the Korean female soloist with the most #1’s on iTunes.
Financial Difficulties Put A Strain On Her Childhood
IU has always been very close to her grandmother. She was raised by her grandmother along with her younger brother. This was because her parents struggled with debt and financial strains and were unable to raise their children. However, her parents do not currently ask for any money after her success.
Although in the past she has been conned for her money from other companies. She was the victim of several scams and spoke about them on the talk show Happy Together 3. “Before debuting, I was actually scammed on multiple accounts,” IU said. “Usually when a company asks you for money, they’re definitely trying to scam you out of your money. However, I was swindled by three companies before I realized what was happening. These companies can demand up to 3 million Won. If you do succumb to their high price, all they do is give you a few stints as an extra. I actually lost a great deal of money to these guys,” she continued.
IU Has Been Involved In A Ton Of Dating Rumors
While her collab with Suga sparked dating rumors, K-Pop stars are often forbidden from disclosing personal details, with some even having a “no dating” clause in their contracts. This leads people to speculate about who these stars are dating. Suga has previously been linked to South Korean singer Suran. The two are believed to be just friends. Again K-pop stars are just extremely private.
But we are glad that IU was able to open up about some of her struggles from the past.
Now she seems like she is in a way better place and is definitely a role model for young girls thrust into the spotlight.
