John Legend says his friendship with Kanye West has ultimately ended due to their opposing political views. Legend has explained that their friendship dissolved because of who he supported in the 2020 elections. The Voice coach says the reason was not because of who West supported.

John Legend and Kanye West were once great friends and collaborators. Unfortunately, their relationship began to take a bad turn couple of years ago due to a presidential election. The beef apparently went down while West was doing his run for the presidency of the United States of America. West took offense to the fact that Legend did not get behind his presidential campaign and supported Joe Biden instead.

John Legend, Kanye West’s Opposing Political Views

Legend recently appeared in an interview, where he discussed why he is not on good terms with West. Opposing political views is not exactly what ruined things, though, according to Legend.

“Yeah, what it got described as was, we stopped being friends because he supported Trump, which was a mischaracterization of what I said,” Legend explained. “What I was saying was that he was very upset with me that I didn’t support him running for president.”

The Voice coach then continued, mentioning that the campaign itself made him very unhappy. Due to the behind the scenes, he did not support West’s attempt at the presidency.

“The most frustrating thing about his run for the Presidency for me was how much it was an operation run by the Trump campaign,” Legend said. “I saw their work on his behalf as a clear scam and an operation to try to siphon Black votes away from Biden.”

What the Future Holds For the Two Music Icons

Legend currently holds uncertainty about the future of his relationship with West. Even though the presidential election happened a few years ago, it doesn’t seem like the musicians have rekindled their friendship just yet.

“I don’t know what will happen in the future, but he was very upset with me that I didn’t support him and I supported Joe Biden. It’s up to him whether he can get past that,” Legend said.

The singer then expressed his honest opinion on the matter of differing political views with someone. He clarified that he would be willing to befriend West once again if he were to set aside their differences.

“I don’t want to live a life that’s so consumed by politics that it’s the sole determinant of who can be my friend and who can’t,” Legend said. But values matter and character matters and moral compass matters.”
