The Voice coach John Legend recently shared his thoughts on being named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive, and how people reacted on social media. He called the title a “double-edged sword” while reading tweets from fans in a new video.

John Legend Talks About Being Sexiest Man Alive

People shared a video of Legend reacting to tweets about himself as part of Twitter’s #FanTweets series. One tweet was about the public reaction to Legend being named Sexiest Man Alive in 2019. The tweet in question read, “john legend reading y’all’s reactions to his people cover.”

Legend laughed at the tweet, which featured a shot of the cartoon character Arthur crying. (The internet has had fun comparing their appearances.) He then revealed that he didn’t actually read anyone’s reactions to his Sexiest Man Alive title.

“I knew in advance that being named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive was a double-edged sword. It’s nice, they put you on the cover, they give you this beautiful spread,” he explained. “But then people just talk sh*t about you afterwards. So I just didn’t check my mentions. So nope, I wasn’t crying about it, ’cause I didn’t look.”

Maybe he got that advice from his fellow The Voice coach Blake Shelton, who previously earned the title in 2017. Former coach Adam Levine was also named Sexiest Man Alive back in 2013.

Legend Is Releasing a New Album Soon

Earlier this month, Legend announced that he would be releasing a new double album simply called Legend on September 9. He also posted the tracklist, which features 24 songs, including recent singles “Dope” and “All She Wanna Do.”

“Until this point, I’ve never used an aspect of my name as the title of an album,” Legend said of the new project. “I had to earn that, to live up to it by delivering in the performance and the music. And this is me saying I’m proud of who I am, I’m confident in the work I’ve done, and I’m just going to declare it.”

Legend will also be returning to The Voice this fall for Season 22, along with longtime coach Blake Shelton, returning coach Gwen Stefani, and new coach Camila Cabello. The new season premieres September 19 on NBC.
