Nicki Minaj is no longer singing “Starships,” and she’s making that very clear. The famous rapper recently surprised her fans when she stopped performing the hit single during her New Year’s Eve performance at the nightclub E11EVEN in Miami.
Nicki Minaj Refuses to Play 2012 Smash Hit “Starships” During New Year’s Eve Performance
In a fan-captured TikTok video, the “Tusa” rapper can be seen tepidly singing the beginning verse of “Starships.” However, few seconds into belting out the opening lyrics, she waved her hand and stopped belting out the song.
“Hold on. Psych, psych, psych, psych,” Minaj said. “I don’t perform that song no more, y’all. I don’t like it, what y’all want me to do? Stupid song.”
To compensate for the disappointed crowd, she launched into “Super Bass” instead.

It’s not the first time that the “Barbie World” singer expressed her dislike towards the 2012 hit. During his 2020 interview with Pollstar Live, she revealed that she feels the cringe whenever she hears the song.
“I hate ‘Starships,’ I mean ew, ‘Starships?'” Minaj told Pollstar Live in a 2020 interview. “I’m like, ‘Why did I do that?’ I really think that every time I hear it.”
Interestingly, “Starships” isn’t the only song she feels indifferent to in her discography.
“I wish I never recorded ‘Anaconda.’ I like the video but ugh,” she said. “My first ever solo song on Billboard was ‘Your Love.’ To this day I like the video but I hate the song. I could go on and on.”
Despite express declaration of disdain, Minaj didn’t reveal any reason for the sudden change of heart.
Fan Reactions are Divided
Upon knowing about the video, several fans expressed their confusion on the rapper’s refusal to sing the hit. One user stated that “Starships” was the song that earned her many supporters.
“Why,” the user wrote. “It’s what got us all loving you. DON’T FORGET ABOUT US.”
“‘Starships’ is still paying her bills and is a fan-favorite song,” one user wrote.
However, in spite of the fans’ disappointment, certain people didn’t question Minaj’s decision.
“To be fair it’s a terrible song,” one user wrote.
“I get that though,” another fan wrote. “Some artists just don’t like their biggest hits. It’s prolly overplayed.”
“How would y’all feel if everyone around u was like ‘do that thing u did 12 years ago,’ after you’ve been evolving and doing better things ever since then … as an artist I’d feel some type of way,” another person wrote.
In December Minaj dropped her highly anticipated album, Pink Friday 2, on her 41st birthday. The “Bang Bang” singer finally released the sequel to her platinum certified debut album Pink Friday after several delays.
