Selena Gomez recently announced that she and Benny Blanco are engaged after a year and a half of dating. It might seem like the proposal just happened, but rumor has it the couple has actually been engaged for several months.

Gomez recently took to Instagram to share a photo of her engagement ring, as well as a few more snaps — including one in which Blanco cuddles her while she’s wearing the new jewel. She captioned the post, “forever begins now.”
The post makes it seem like Blanco just proposed. However, a new report suggests that the couple has actually been engaged for months but held off on announcing the news. The alleged reason for the wait? Gomez’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.
Bieber and his wife Hailey welcomed their first child together, a son named Jack, in August of this year. According to The Daily Mail, Gomez and Blanco waited to announce their engagement so as not to coincide with Bieber’s baby news.
“They became engaged in August and Selena didn’t want her engagement to be tied to Bieber in any way. They knew it would,” a source told the outlet. “Selena knew that there would be stories accusing her of getting engaged to turn attention away from Justin’s baby, or that people would claim that she did this to one up him.”
The Couple Already Sparked Engagement Rumors
The report that Gomez and Blanco got engaged in August lines up with a photo Gomez posted that got fans talking. The singer and actress shared a mirror selfie but chose to place a heart emoji over her hand, leading fans to wonder if she was hiding a ring.
However, some fans pointed out that because the photo was taken in a mirror, it was actually Gomez’s right hand that was covered — not the hand which would have an engagement ring. Still, there was an anonymous tip shared with the gossip account DeuxMoi that same month claiming the couple was engaged.
Regardless of when Blanco popped the question, the couple received an outpouring of support from fans and famous friends. That includes Taylor Swift, who jokingly commented on Gomez’s announcement, “yes I will be the flower girl.”
Blanco himself also chimed in on the post, writing, “hey wait… that’s my wife.”
