Kelly Clarkson has been dominating television with special guests on The Kelly Clarkson Show since 2019. This time she shocked viewers with a very special surprise interview with Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey. The Gentleman star also revealed his secret country music video past.
Matthew McConaughey Reveals Connection To Country Music
Kelly performed the song “Walkaway Joe” by Trisha Yearwood featuring Don Henley during the Kellyoke segment of The Kelly Clarkson Show. She announced that a man named Matthew requested the song. Viewers were shocked to see Dallas Buyers Club actor Matthew McConaughey pop up on the screen in a virtual appearance. Kelly asked him why he specifically requested her to sing this song.
“Well ‘Walkaway Joe’ I think it was early 1992 and I’m going to college here at the University of Texas, this was before Dazed and Confused and I was trying to get odd jobs in front of the camera when I could and I got cast in that music video to play Joe.”
Matthew had his big break with a role in the 1993 film Dazed and Confused. This came after he appeared in an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. This led to a slew of other acting gigs. He solidified his status as a top name in the entertainment industry.
He described the role he got to play in the video. “Things are going well then where we end up the last stop she wakes up and Joe, myself, is nowhere to be seen therefore aka the title ‘Walkaway Joe'” he said. Sure enough, there are plenty of black and white scenes featuring Matthew and a love interest falling in love in the music video.
Matthew And Trisha Never Actually Got To Meet In Person
“I love that about country music videos especially in like the 90s there would be such a story like a plot like they’d have actors like really big actors and I think that’s amazing,” Kelly said. “I didn’t know that was your first thing, I didn’t know that was before Dazed and Confused, that’s amazing.”
“Walkaway Joe was my first time in front of the camera and I still don’t believe I’ve met Trisha in-person,” Matthew said as Kelly laughed. In 2014, Trisha spoke about Matthew’s music video role.
“He was cast from local talent in Austin, Texas, where the footage was shot,” she said in the interview with People Magazine. “The performance with Don Henley was shot in Nashville, so I never met Matthew.”
Trisha did joke “if he ever wants to be in another Trisha Yearwood video, I won’t make him audition.” But, we’ve got an even better idea. Picture Matthew starring in one of Kelly’s future music videos. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
