When asked what fans can look forward to in Season 20, Mandel pointed out that former judge Mel B will be back on the panel, replacing Heidi Klum. He added that he believes the season will be “bigger, better, more celebratory.”
“We want it to be a special year. I think everybody who’s auditioning wants to be more special than being on year 19. So I’m excited about the prospects,” Mandel said. “I cannot wait to sit down and see what they put in front of me. But I know just from the inside and from talking to the producers and talking to the network that they have so much more planned even in the way they’re going to produce it.”
The longtime judge said he thinks it will be “an epic, celebratory season.” He also expressed how special it is for him to be “watching dreams come true in real time,” calling himself “one of the luckiest guys in the world” to be able to witness that.

Why Mandel Wants a Comedian to ‘Go Really Far’
Mandel admitted that he as a “soft spot” for comedians who audition for the show, adding that he hopes to see someone in comedy “go really far” on the show. A stand-up comedian has never won the million-dollar prize in the show’s history.
“I don’t think people appreciate [comedians],” Mandel said. “Especially because anything goes on AGT. When you see somebody hanging from a cable three stories in the air lighting themselves on fire, then a man or a woman or kid who comes out and just starts talking and does a monologue, people have a tendency to not be as impressed.”
However, he praised comedians’ “ability to come out there, write your own material, and bare your soul.” Will this be the year that a comedian finally takes home the grand prize? We’ll have to wait until Season 20 premieres May 27 on NBC.
