Why ‘AGT’ Star Flau’jae Johnson Says Music, Basketball Are ‘Like the Same Thing’

Rapper and basketball player Flau’jae Johnson, who competed on America’s Got Talent Season 13, recently shared how her two passions go “hand-in-hand” as she marks the release of her new album Flau & B.
Flau’jae Johnson Talks About Music and Basketball
Johnson plays college basketball for the LSU Tigers. She’s also a rapper signed to Jay-Z’s record label Roc Nation. The 21-year-old has put out quite a bit of music since she first appeared on AGT in 2018, including the track “Came Out a Beast” with Lil Wayne.
“As I get better and better in basketball and playing with pace, I kind of realize it’s like the same thing,” Johnson told People in a new interview. “The music and the basketball. You see what I’m saying? It’s like pace and rhythm and flow with everything I’m doing in basketball, so I try to just play with more rhythm. And once I’ve been doing that, it’s been feeling like I’ve been a better athlete.”
Johnson made it clear that her new album Flau & B is “not hardcore R&B,” admitting that she’s “not a singer.” She explained that she’s interested in showing her range as an artist, adding, “How I could go create an anthem with Lil Wayne, but I could also make something that’ll have you in your feelings, have you vibing and on those late night drives, highway music, things like that.”

How Far Did She Get on AGT?
Johnson auditioned for Season 13 of America’s Got Talent with an original song about gun violence called “Guns Down,” inspired by the death of her father, rapper Camoflauge. She earned four “yes” votes from the judges to move on.
The young rapper went on to perform in the Judge Cuts, where she earned a Golden Buzzer from guest judge Chris Hardwick. That sent her straight to the Quarterfinals, where she was eliminated. Johnson later returned to compete on AGT: All-Stars in 2023, performing “Ready or Not” by Lauryn Hill in the preliminaries.
Unfortunately, Johnson didn’t move any further in the All-Stars competition. However, she’s definitely accomplished a lot at a very young age. Johnson told People that she’s “excited about getting better.”
