Pop-rock superstar Demi Lovato is over the phase where they think dating old men is cool and romantic. The “Heart Attack” singer has recently reflected on how their present relationship made them overcome their “gross” daddy issues.
Demi Lovato Describes Dating Older Men as “Gross”
It’s absolutely clear that Lovato is regretting their decision to date men significantly older than them. During Monday’s of SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, the singer admitted that their daddy issues have really affected their past relationship decisions.
“I think what I went through was I had a phase of dating older men and dating older guys because of my daddy issues, obviously,” they said.
Now, the former Disney Channel star is in an “amazing relationship” with Canadian artist Jordan Lutes. Navigating romance with a guy just a year older than them, Lovato can positively say that they’re already gotten over their daddy issues.
“I can say with confidence that my daddy issues aren’t anything that are inside of me anymore,” they said. “I think there’s a few signs to that. I’m with a partner that is my age, essentially. I look back on the past [of dating older men] and think, ‘That’s gross.'”
In the past, Lovato has been romantically linked to several older men. They started dating Wilmer Valderrama in 2010, having an on and off relationship with him for six years. They met the That 70’s Show alum when they were 17 and he was 29.
Years after their breakup, the Lovato released the song “29,” which fans believed to be about Valderrama. Lovato has never confirmed the rumors, but they have given caution to young girls to not date older men “unless you’re of age.”
She Gushes Over Magnetic, Healthy Romance with Lutes
Elsewhere in the interview, Lovato also gave a glimpse of their relationship with Lutes. According to the singer, it feels healthy growing together with someone their age.
“There’s this partnership there that is just so magnetic, and the way that we laugh together — it’s just nonstop,” they said. “So I think if you can find someone that makes you feel safe, that you’re so attracted to, that you laugh with constantly, that’s the formula of a really great relationship.”
Lovato subsequently shared that them and Lutes have already talked about getting married and having children. As per the “Cool for the Summer” hitmaker, they knows he’s “the one” because of that.
“We’ve talked about it,” they said. “It’s been about a year and a half, so we’re taking our time with it a little bit, you know? I think it’s important not to rush that.”
Lovato and Jutes met when they were working on a session for Lovato’s album HOLY FVCK. They eventually became a couple months after being friends.
“He was just so focused on the music,” Lovato stated in a previous interview. “So we were friends for a while and then told each other how we felt.”
