American Idol Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery was recently a guest on Audacy LIVE, where he performed several songs and answered a few questions about his life and career. During the interview, he shared the advice he would give his younger self.

American Idol‘s Scotty McCreery Shares Advice for Younger Self

McCreery was just 16 years old when he auditioned for American Idol. When asked what advice he would give his younger self when he tried out for the show, McCreery joked that they didn’t “have enough time for what I would tell that kid.”

“I would just tell myself then … patience,” McCreery said. “I feel like I wanted everything to happen right then. As soon as the show was done, I wanted everything to just work. It was crazy off the bat, but it didn’t quite work like I thought it would right away. But I think things not working right away helps me today appreciate when they do work.”

McCreery pointed out that he has now had six No. 1 songs on country radio, but it “wasn’t that long ago” that he didn’t have any. He added, “I appreciate all that stuff more today because it took a little time.”

How Becoming a Dad Changed Him

In 2022, McCreery and his wife Gabi welcomed their first child together, a son named Merrick Avery. During his chat with Audacy, the singer shared how becoming a father has changed his outlook on life and songwriting.

“All of a sudden, it’s no longer about what I want or what I’m thinking,” McCreery shared. “Everything is about Avery, and what do we need to do for him, and how can I help my wife support him? So for me, it’s just completely changed everything. What’s important in life, your perspective on life, and I’ve been loving it … The coolest thing I’ll ever do is being his daddy. I’m loving every minute.”

McCreery said he’ll probably incorporate his perspective as a father into his songs as the years go by, “as he’s growing up and getting into some trouble.” He jokingly told Avery, “Boy, you better watch out.”

The singer recently released his sixth studio album, Rise & Fall, featuring the lead single “Cab in a Solo.”
