Ariana DeBose, celebrated star of West Side Story and So You Think You Can Dance alum, recently shared her thoughts on the backlash she faced after her BAFTA Awards performance. In an exclusive interview with Marie Claire’s Ambition Issue, she delves into the impact of social media criticism, the emotions she experienced, and the importance of embracing vulnerability.

DeBose Reveals The Real Story Behind BAFTA Performance

The pressures of producing a captivating show admittedly pushed DeBose to collaborate with the production team to create something more elaborate. “Lessons were learned,” she stated, recognizing that not every performance goes as planned.

The criticism she faced after the BAFTAs was particularly hurtful, not because of the actual performance itself, but because her beloved grandmother had to witness the disparaging comments. DeBose shed light on the fact that the negative remarks had nothing to do with her talent or effort, emphasizing the cruelty of online bullying.

“I have found that trying to act as if I don’t feel something is not helpful,” DeBose said. “I don’t understand why we use social media to just straight up pick on people.”

Since that experience, DeBose admitted to grappling with stage fright. Nonetheless, she remains committed to challenging herself and confronting her fears head-on. By understanding her emotions and actively refusing to allow self-doubt to paralyze her, she persistently pursues her passion. DeBose recognizes that despite the initial backlash, the tide eventually turned, and people began to appreciate the joy and fun she intended to convey.

DeBose Celebrates Her Role in Disney’s Wish

Amidst all the hate and discrimination that persist, she finds solace in being part of Disney’s animated film, Wish. As an openly queer woman, DeBose feels grateful for Disney’s unwavering support, allowing her to be an active partner in the making of the movie.

Through her involvement, she hopes to create a positive working environment that paves the way for individuals who share her identity and aspirations. DeBose’s resilience certainly shines through as she continues to embrace opportunities that empower her as she takes on the role of Asha in Disney’s Wish.

DeBose’s interview with Marie Claire offers a candid look into her experience with the BAFTA Awards performance backlash and her journey toward overcoming self-doubt. Marie Claire’s Ambition Issue also features Hollywood’s Next A-List portfolio, highlighting the performers the magazine’s culture editors believe will dominate screens for years to come. DeBose feels honored to headline this list, sharing the spotlight with other talented individuals such as Maude Apatow, Jennie Kim, Bella Ramsey, Ayo Edebiri, Halle Bailey, and many more.
