In a recent interview at TCA, The World’s Best Executive Producer Mike Darnell said the new show is CBS’ response to America’s Got Talent. And they are “ready for the challenge!” Premiering right after the Super Bowl on Sunday, The World’s Best has the best platform in television to launch. So it is shaping up to be quite the battle!
Mike Darnell’s full interview goes even more into what the competition show genre looks like and how The World’s Best will bring something new to the table. But before we get into that, here’s a preview of the new show:

The World’s Best is hosted by James Corden, with Drew Barrymore, RuPaul, and Faith Hill on the judging panel. The show is produced by titans of reality television, Mike Darnell (American Idol, Ellen’s Game of Games) and Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Voice). So really everything is shaping up for this to be a success! At TCA, Mike Darnell talked about how America’s Got Talent hasn’t really been challenged head-to-head. Other shows have similar elements, but none feature variety acts quite the same.
So that’s when Mike Darnell and the other EPs decided to take it on! They created The World’s Best with a “Wall of the Worlds,” featuring 39 judges from all over the world to vote alongside the three judges on the show. In discussing how this new spin will give them an edge in an already competitive genre, here’s what Mike had to say:
“It’s a competitive industry and no one is more competitive than NBC. That’s why they have America’s Got Talent: The Champions on. That was a direct shot at us.”
But Mike says they’re ready for the challenge! Competition always makes for entertaining TV too. Mike also addressed the talent that will be competing:
“It feels appropriate after the Super Bowl. I’m not embarrassed by the [show’s] title. I think we did it!”
This is quite some confidence from the veteran EP. And we cannot wait to see if it lives up to the name! Plus, it’ll be interesting to see how it does against The Masked Singer, which airs at the same time, and America’s Got Talent: The Champions, which is based on a similar format. The World’s Best premieres this Sunday, February 3rd, right after the Super Bowl!
