Should ‘The Voice’ Coaches Have a Limit on Four-Chair Turns?

The Voice is about to wrap up the Blind Auditions for Season 24, and coach John Legend’s team is looking pretty impressive. The coach has eight four-chair turns on his team. Does this give him an advantage? Should there be a limit to how many four-chair turns a coach can have?

John Legend Has Eight Four-Chair Turns on The Voice

So far this season, Legend has gotten eight four-chair turns to join his team — Mara Justine, Ephraim Owens, Stee, Kaylee Shimizu, Lila Forde, JaRae Womack, Willie Gomez, and Caleb Sasser. Fellow coach Gwen Stefani has four, while Niall Horan and Reba McEntire have three each.

Before Season 24 premiered, The Voice coaches tried to predict which of them would have the winning team this time around. Horan teased that Legend’s team this season is “crazy.” Now we understand what he meant by that.

It’s clear that a lot of talented singers want to work with Legend. So it’s interesting that the coach has only won a single season out of the seven he’s completed on so far. Legend won Season 16 with singer Maelyn Jarmon.

So Legend’s many four-chair turns don’t necessarily guarantee that the viewers at home will vote for his artists. However, it begs the question of whether the show should introduce a new rule limiting how many four-chair turns each coach can have on their team.

Should the Show Limit Four-Chair Turns Per Team?

Personally, I don’t think there should be a limit to how many four-chair turns a coach can have. The first reason for this has already been mentioned — four-chair turns aren’t guaranteed to do well. Parade reported earlier this year that 10 of the show’s winners had earned the honor.

That’s less than half of the winners over the show’s 23 seasons so far. Last season’s winner, Gina Miles, only turned two chairs. So while a coach having a lot of four-chair turns is definitely impressive, it isn’t an automatic advantage.

Another reason not to impose a limit is that artists who turn all four chairs deserve to have the choice of which coach they want to work with. The introduction of the block has already complicated things, since an artist can turn all four coaches’ chairs but be barred from choosing one of them.

Coaches also have a limit to how many artists they can have on their team in total. That puts some of the later auditioners at a disadvantage. Adding yet another restriction would just make things more complicated and give artists less of a choice.

What do you think? Is it fair that Team Legend has so many four-chair turns? Do you think someone on his team will win this season? Let us know in the comments below.
