This week, the NFL Players Choir takes the stage onAmerica’s Got TalentSeason 17. The group, made up of current and former football players, has been performing for over a decade. We can’t wait to hear what this choir has in store.
The NFL Players Choir Debuted in 2008
The group first debuted in 2008 at Super Bowl XLII in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2019, choir director Myron Butler told Billboard that the group’s only requirement is to have played in the NFL.
Butler told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he liked the idea of “football meeting faith” through the choir’s performances. He added “I got a chance to meet the fellows and you come to understand that here is a group of men who are believers and love the Lord and they aren’t ashamed of their faith in God.”
For years, the group has performed at the annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration alongside talented musicians such as Donnie McClurkin, Melvin Crispell III, Erica Campbell, and Hezekiah Walker. In 2020, they performed virtually for Share the Light, an event supporting the American Cancer Society.
Super Bowl Gospel Celebration founder Melanie Few-Harrison has said of the choir, “We have some accomplished musicians with great voices who have been with us from the beginning. It seems that the players who can sing know other players who can sing, and it happens from there.”
Although the group is usually much larger, it appears that only 12 members will audition for AGT. This reportedly includes Buffalo Bills wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie, as well as former Bills players Bryan Scott, Michael Gaines, and Dwayne Wright.
Other players performing on AGT include Stephen Pierce, Leonard Weaver, Jamon Brown, Cameron Lamark Newton, Prince Amukamara, and Tully Banta-Cain. The group has been posting their excitement on Instagram in the days leading up to their audition.
We can’t wait to see how the judges respond to the choir’s audition. Tune into America’s Got Talent on Tuesday night to see it all happen.
