Apparently, even the Sexiest Man Alive had his fair share of relationship red flags. In his recent appearance on Jay Shetty Podcast, John Legend revealed that he wasn’t a “great partner” to his wife Chrissy Teigen.
John Legend Admits to Being “Selfish” Way Back
Admitting that he wasn’t as committed to Chrissy Teigen as he is now, Legend revealed that his selfishness used get in the way of their relationship. The singer-songwriter stated that although he truly loved his wife, there were internal struggles that he had to deal with.
“I think I was more selfish then,” he said. “I wasn’t a great partner at the beginning of our relationship. Even though I was very into her and very excited to be with her. I was still selfish. I was in my mid-20s, still not ready to fully be the committed partner that I am now.”
With his immaturity sabotaging his supposed commitment to Teigen, Legend explained that he had to grow to maintain their romance. Legend said that he and Teigen’s attraction towards each other in the early stage of their companionship was merely infatuation. Through time, this transformed into love, becoming their shield to withstand the “test of time.”
“You just grow, and you mature. Part of it is it’s just a matter of time. You need time to become that person you want to be,” he said.
For Legend, the challenges they encountered during their marriage have fortified and made them stronger. His recent creative work, “I Don’t Love You Like I Used To,” manifested that aspect.
He Says He Appreciates His Wife Even More
Throughout their romantic journey, John inevitably discovered his wife’s charming character. Seeing Teigen’s personality unfold through years, it made Legend love her even more.
“How she reacts to stress, how she reacts to life, how she can find a joke even in the craziest … even in grief, she’s able to find humor,” he said.
For those who may not know, the couple suffered from a tragic miscarriage in 2020. According to Teigen, she unfortunately had to undergo a life-saving abortion. Basically, facing this adversity helped the Voice coach to value his wife more.
“I think she’s cooler now than I ever thought she was,” he said. “I just really have seen her in all kinds of situations. I just value her more, and am in awe of her more than I ever have been.”
Currently, the married couple is expecting another baby. Now, Legend is “cautiously optimistic” in dealing with this pregnancy, given the loss they’ve experienced roughly two years ago.
