‘I Just Gagged!’: Picky Eater Maddie Poppe Tries Watermelon, Hummus, And More

Jill O'Rourke | Talent Recap

Did you know that American Idol winner Maddie Poppe is such a picky eater, she hasn’t even tried things like grapes, watermelon, and hummus? In a new YouTube video with her boyfriend, fellow Idol contestant Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie finally gave these foods (and more) a try — and hated most of them.

As Maddie and Caleb explained, her diet mostly consists of food like chicken nuggets, steak, and pasta. “It’s time for some improvements in my life,” Maddie admitted, pointing out that she’s now 21 and has upgraded to a Queen mattress (the universal sign of adulthood).

You might be shocked at how many common foods Maddie hasn’t tried. That includes cottage cheese, mango, and kiwi. Maddie managed to taste all of the foods presented to her, but her preconceived notions might have influenced her reactions.

“I hate it,” she declared as soon as she tried a pretzel dipped in hummus. (The pretzel she liked, but not the dip.) As for the cottage cheese, the texture seemed to bother her more than the taste. But it’s her reaction to the various fruits that might really shock you.

She seemed to like the mango at first, saying it’s “like a pineapple meets an orange,” but she ended up spitting it out after a few more chews. And if you thought it was impossible to dislike watermelon, Maddie is here to prove you wrong. “I just gagged!” she said after spitting it in the trash. She rated it a 1 out of 10.

It might be hard for some of us to imagine hating these foods, but at least Maddie was willing to give them a try. It’s also nice to see Caleb being such a supportive boyfriend as she embarked on her food adventure. Now who’s in the mood for some refreshing watermelon?
