Demi Lovato Defends Alien Statement: “It’s Not That Serious”
During her new docuseries, Demi Lovato made waves for saying that “alien” is an offensive term when referencing extraterrestrial beings. As soon as news broke that Lovato thought “aliens” is a derogatory term, people jumped into the conversation. In case you were concerned with Lovato’s thought process, they have shared that it wasn’t that serious of a statement.
Lovato Says “Aliens” is a Derogatory Term
NBC’s new docuseries featuring Lovato aired on Peacock on September 30, 2021. This series has four parts and is named Unidentified with Demi Lovato. In this series Lovato, is accompanied by Matthew Scott and Dallas Lovato on a search for extraterrestrial beings.
This series is all about extraterrestrial life, so Lovato shared their love for the unknown in a recent interview. They stated that this series is a stepping stone in their career and they decided to film everything that goes into searching for UFOs. Everything Lovato said seemed valid, until they mentioned why they will not call these creatures aliens.
“I think that we have to stop calling them aliens because aliens is a derogatory term for anything. That’s why I like to call them ETS! So yeah, that’s a little tidbit. A little information that I learned,” said Lovato.
Even though Lovato is simply sharing their opinion, fans were quick to criticize their viewpoint. Many understand that Lovato knows this term is offensive when used toward migrant aliens. But many people pointed out that extraterrestrial aliens likely wouldn’t even speak English, so they most likely wouldn’t know what the term actually means.
While the backlash was occuring, Lovato was quick to defend themself on social media. They screenshotted an article by TMZ and posted it to their Instagram story. The caption of Lovato’s post read “hey tmz – it’s not that serious.”
Most of the time in situations like these it’s a matter of people taking what they said too seriously. Even though I’m sure Lovato seemed confident in what they were saying in the moment, they have clearly debunked the rumors.
