During NBC’s New Year’s Eve special, country superstar Blake Shelton sang his new song “Minimum Wage.” The song is about his love for his fiance Gwen Stefani, but many called out The Voice coach for being “tone deaf” with his lyrics.

Blake Shelton’s New Song ‘Minimum Wage’ Is Causing Controversy

Throughout the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many people have been struggling financially and are relying on unemployment checks to put food on the table. Some people are still making minimum wage which is not nearly enough to survive off of during this difficult time in the world. Other businesses have been forced to close down and lay off all of their workers. Fans pointed out that Blake’s lyrics come off a bit insensitive for those who are struggling financially.

“Girl, lookin’ at you lookin’ at me that way/ Can make a man feel rich on minimum wage” Blake sings in the song. The song has a deeper meaning about love and Blake and Gwen’s relationship but hearing it may make some people think otherwise.

“Girl, your love is money, your love is money/ Yeah, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage/Girl, your love is money, your love is money/Yeah, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage” Blake sings. He also sings about going on a date to Waffle House and splitting a meal and playing shows for pennies. Many people on social media find this ironic considering Blake and Gwen are both millionaires.

Blake is believed to be making a whopping $13 million per season of The Voice. It was revealed that he was offered several bonuses during seasons where his girlfriend Gwen appeared on the show to play up their relationship for the cameras. With two seasons of the show premiering per year, Blake rakes in over $26 million annually for his time on The Voice. Fans Are Divided About The Lyrics Of Blake’s New Song

Blake’s estimated net worth is somewhere around $100 million. He is constantly releasing new music, with 40 of his singles charting and 26 No. 1 hits. He also owns a string of Ole Red chain restaurants along with an endorsement deal with Smithworks Vodka. All of this caused a difference of opinion between fans of the “Minimum Wage” singer.

“Usually don’t care about this stuff but…Millionaire country singer Blake Shelton debuting a song on NBC about how love can make them feel rich on minimum wage. Odd timing with millions unemployed and struggling during a pandemic” one Twitter user wrote.

“Does anyone else find Blake Shelton’s ‘Minimum Wage’ song to be incredibly tone deaf to our country’s current state?” another asked.

“I’m trying not to overthink this one. What Shelton was singing about was sweet. No matter if he is rich or poor monetarily, he will feel rich with his woman” one Twitter user replied.

“Country music is typically written from the point of view of the common man. So give @blakeshelton a break. Singing about minimum wage is no different than singing about dirt roads and cheap beer in solo cups. And stop looking for sh*t to b*tch about” another Twitter user added.
