Alicia Keys Gets Dragged Over Plot of New Netflix Movie

The former coach of The Voice, Alicia Keys, was trending on Twitter after retweeting the trailer of a new movie from Netflix, which Keys produced. Some fans think the plot of the film aligns too much with her own life and marriage to Swizz Beatz.
Almost a year ago Keys announced that she would be producing this Netflix film that stars Christina Milian, Jay Pharoah, and Sinqua Walls. Milian plays “a singer who accidentally gets booked to perform at her ex’s wedding but when she rediscovers feelings for him, his brother attempts to keep them from reuniting,” according to Netflix.
Keys shared Netflix’s tweet of the trailer, saying that the movie looks cute. Although there is excitement about this film, people have been dragging Keys due to her own affair and marriage with Swizz Beats. This movie seems to hit a bit too close to home for some fans.
“It’s funny Alicia Keys produced a movie about having feelings for somebody else’s fiancé lmao,” said one viewer on Twitter.
Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats Reconnected Through Work
Keys and Swizz Beats met through mutual friends when they were 14 and 16 years old respectively. But, later in life (and over ten years ago), Keys and Swizz Beats worked on a project together, and the rest is history.
“The more we talked the more I noticed how his mind worked. Beyond the baggy jeans and arm tats there was depth. He was so aware of what was happening around the world,” said Keys in an interview with People.
Their romance became controversial as Swizz Beats was said to be still married to Mashonda Tifrere when he and Keys began their relationship. The split was pretty messy and even resulted in Tifrere accusing Keys of being the other woman on Twitter.
Since 2018, news about Keys and Tifere becoming friends is almost the only thing ever posted about them. Tifere also deleted her accusatory tweets.
So Twitter, Why Bring This Up Now?
Considering the online beef between Tifere and Keys has been over for so long, why does the internet feel the need to bring it up now? Is it because the storyline is similar to what happened between Keys and Swizzle Beats? Or is it the internet not letting go of the situation.
I personally think that the harsh comments were unnecessary, especially considering Keys most likely had nothing to do with the storyline. The screenplay was written by Tabi McCartney and Dana Schmalenberg, not Keys. Chances are, Keys gave money to the project, and saw the product for the first time along with fans on Twitter.
One fan even commented on the fact that people got Alicia Keys trending on Twitter:
“Ya’ll really got Alicia Keys trending because she produced a movie about a woman falling for her friend’s fiance?”
