Dancing with the Stars Season 31 contestant Sam Champion recently returned to his old stomping grounds at Good Morning America after leaving the show in 2013. The meteorologist filled in for regular GMA weather anchor Ginger Zee.
Sam Champion Returns to Good Morning America
Champion left Good Morning America in December 2013 and joined The Weather Channel soon after. The show’s weekend meteorologist Ginger Zee replaced him as chief meteorologist. But on Thursday, some viewers were surprised to see Champion back on GMA reporting on the weather.
It turns out that Champion was filling in for Zee while she’s sick. She posted on Twitter Thursday morning that “rolling fevers have taken me out,” thanking Champion “for filling in today.” Zee added, “Hoping I’ll see you all back on @GMA soon.”
However, this isn’t the first time Champion has filled in for Zee over the years. He even filled in for her during her maternity leave. Champion left The Weather Channel in 2016 and is currently working at ABC7 in New York.
On Thursday, Champion posted photos to Instagram from the set of GMA, writing that his “heart is happy after spending the am with great friends!!” He tagged the show’s anchors Lara Spencer, Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan, and George Stephanopoulos.

Champion Competed on DWTS Season 31
Last year, Champion appeared on Season 31 of Dancing with the Stars. He was paired with longtime pro dancer Cheryl Burke. They ended up being eliminated in the fourth week of the competition, after dancing a Paso Doble to “The Greatest Show.”
After their elimination, Champion called Burke “the best there’s ever been” on DWTS, adding, “I can’t wait to just hang out with her now and not have to balance at the same time.”
Earlier this month, Champion took some time off from TV work, as he and his husband Rubem Robierb spent time in Brazil celebrating their 10th anniversary.
