Olympic gold medalist Sunisa Lee has recently announced that she will be ending her collegiate gymnastics career early. Apparently, the 20-year-old war eagle is dealing with a kidney condition, preventing her from resuming her athletic years in the university.

Suni Lee Announces She’s Ending Her College Gymnastics Journey

Lee, hailed as the first-ever Hmong-American Olympic gold medalist posted an update on twitter, expressing her appreciation to Auburn University. According to the gymnast, she’s been “so proud” of the determination and resilience that Team USA has manifested this season.

“Auburn, thank you for the best 2 years of my life and for giving me the opportunity to make history alongside this amazing group. I am forever grateful for this community,” she wrote.

Lee explained that she has been dealing with a non-gymnastics-related issue involving her kidneys. In the same post, the gymnast said that Auburn’s medical team did not clear her to train over the past few weeks for her own safety.

“I am blessed and thankful to be working with the best specialized medical team to treat and manage my diagnosis. My focus at this time is my health and recovery,” she said.

The athlete then admitted that it has been challenging for her to end her Auburn career unexpectedly early, but nonetheless “thankful for all of the love and support.”

She Expects to Join Paris Olympics 2024

While Lee’s kidney condition currently prevents her from pursuing gymnastics during college, the athlete is not, in any form, stopping her big dreams. She is thus anticipating that by the time Paris Olympics 2024 takes place, she’ll be one to compete.

“I will not stop pursuing my dreams for a bid to Paris in 2024. In fact, this experience has sharpened my vision for the future,” Lsee said.

Before, the gymnast stated that representing Auburn University was her ambition. Consequently, Lee admitted that she’s learned so much about herself, true teamwork, and community.
