Shakira to Potentially Face More Tax Fraud Charges

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Shakira might be facing more tax fraud charges after a Spanish court opened an investigation into her levies. The forthcoming probe will add to the pop singer’s current tax evasion case against the Spanish government.

Shakira Blasted with Second Tax Fraud Inquiry

According to the Higher Court of Justice of Catalonia press office, a judge in Barcelona has allowed state prosecutors to probe into “two alleged counts” of tax fraud in 2018. The complaint accuses Shakira of defrauding the Tax Agency in personal income taxes and assets for the said financial year.

During that time, the Colombian artist was staying in Barcelona alongside her ex-partner Gerard Pique and her two sons. Now though, Shakira is residing in Miami with her children after she and the retired soccer player called it quits.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is already waiting for a trial date regarding her alleged tax evasion of $16.2 million from 2012 to 2014. If proven guilty, Shakira may spend up to eight years in jail.

As of Thursday morning, Shakira had not been formally notified regarding the Prosecutor’s complaint. Her legal team stated that they “will not make any comments until the notification reaches them through the official and legally established channels.” Furthermore, they stated that Shakira must be notified personally at her new address, in strict accordance with law.

She Reiterates Her Innocence Amid Piled Up Accusations

Despite multiple allegations, Shakira is solid in asserting her good faith. Through her public relations firm, the “Beautiful Liar” singer stated that she’s always followed the advice of her financial advisers.

“As has been stated on numerous occasions, Shakira defends having always acted in compliance with the law and under the guidance of the best tax experts,” the statement reads.

Furthermore, amid these alarming cases, Shakira is rather fixated in growing her creative career.

“Now she is focused on her artistic life in Miami and is calm and confident in a favorable resolution to her tax affairs,” the statement reads.

Over the years, the Spanish government has accused big personalities regarding their duties, including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. While the said two were found guilty, they managed to dodge prison time as they were only first-time offenders.
