She expressed that now, she is able to look back and smile, knowing that the song encapsulates the growth she has achieved.
“This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album.” Gomez said. “I thought it was important to share the music, as I know many can relate to the fact that the road to self-discovery generally comes through the scars in one’s life.”
In the lyrics of “Lose You to Love Me,” Gomez subtly alludes to her on-and-off relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. Lines such as “Set fire to my purpose and I let it burn” seem to reference Bieber’s 2015 album, “Purpose.” Another verse states, “In two months you replaced us like it was easy,” reflecting the rapid public transition from their relationship to Bieber’s subsequent engagement and marriage to Hailey Bieber.
