Nick Cannon joined Kevin Hart for a deep conversation on his new Peacock talk show, Hart to Heart. The pair have been longtime friends ever since the start of their careers. Though they might pull silly pranks on each other and broadcast them all over Instagram, thereโs a lot more mutual respect within their friendship that people donโt know about.
Kevin Hart and Nick Cannon Open Up About Snagging Roles Early On in Their Careers
Hart to Heart follows a very stripped-back talk show model that allows celebrities to feel comfortable talking about deep personal topics. Hart posted Cannonโs phone number on a Billboard in July after Cannon gifted him with a llama for his birthday. Despite the antics, Hart praised him for locking down a crucial role in his young career.
โThere was a high amount of envy early on in our careers because I remember you were clicking so fast,โ Hart said. โYou were putting the beats together so quick and I will never forget the Drumline opportunity in the movie and when you were casted. Every young black actor in Hollywood at the time, this was the role of a lifetime for so many, and I remember when you got the part and there was no animosity.โ
Cannon secured the lead role in the 2002 film which eventually led to a sequel 12 years later. Drumline was one of Cannonโs first-ever lead film roles alongside Zoe Saldana. The Masked Singer host commented that even rappers were vying for the coveted part. Hart didnโt have any ill-will towards Cannon for getting the part.
โYou not only rocked that opportunity but as others came we developed a great energy and itโs always been that yin and yang,โ Hart said.
Cannon does not consider himself to be a competitive person. Both he and Hart looked up to so many other comedians back in the day that served as a blueprint for their careers. The father of seven is โnothing but proudโ of Hart for everything he has accomplished.
When it came to auditioning for roles early on in his career, Cannon said that he never booked anything. He had the stand-up mentality that he had to write and produce his own stuff to be successful. He was always blown away whenever people wanted to give him parts. In his eyes, other generations have a more competitive nature. To this day, Cannon still feels like he and Hart have never adapted that competitive mentality.
Why Cannon Decided to Create His Own Television Show
Cannonโs show Wild Nโ Out is now in its 16th season airing on MTV. The first season aired in 2005. Hart did appear on an episode in Season 1. He has returned to the stage several times throughout the seasons to serve as a team captain. He believes this show has helped a lot of people achieve big things since its inception.
โYou act now as a springboard to the higher levels of success whether you realize it or not,โ Hart said. โThe gateway of Nick Cannon, Iโm talking about Wild Nโ Out, Iโm talking about what that now is. Youโre a portal, you go through this thing, through this machine.โ
Hart was there at the comedy clubs with Cannon at the start of his successful career. Other comedians approached Cannon at The Comedy Union about putting them on. He decided to rent out comedy clubs and bring in cameras. He got a room full of writers together to talk about creating a show that incorporated all of the little improv and games they were already doing on stage at the clubs.
This was the birth of Wild Nโ Out. Cannon knew that he wanted to mix, hip-hop, stand-up and comedy together. The show has found the perfect balance of all of those things. Cannonโs go-getter mentality is the reason why the show has been so successful in bridging comedy and music together.
