Katy Perry may no longer be a judge on American Idol, but she’s still willing to share her advice for future contestants on the show. In a recent Audacy Check In, Perry shared some wise words for aspiring singers in the competition.

Katy Perry Shares American Idol Advice

Idol is a crash course, and then there’s the real world afterwards,” Perry said. “I think you just have to have a really defined personality. There’s so many people offering so much, it has to be such a defined, such an authentic personality.”

The former judge went on to warn about the increased popularity of AI in music, adding, “If you’re not so authentically defined, someone like Chappell [Roan], it’s not gonna work anymore. And you don’t have to be a freak for being a freak’s sake. You just gotta be you, whatever version of you that is.”

Perry announced her departure from the American Idol judging panel earlier this year. It was recently announced that former Idol winner Carrie Underwood will be taking her seat, alongside longtime judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

Perry Is Excited to Go on Tour

Perry is gearing up to release her new album 143 on September 20. She’s also excited to get back out on tour for the first time since 2018. In recent years, Perry has mostly performed in a Las Vegas residency which has since ended.

“I wanna go on tour. I wanna go and visit all of my fans who have come out so hard, and so supportive, and so ride,” Perry told Audacy. “They have ridden so hard for me. Not to be cheesy, but we have really loved each other for lifetimes, it feels like.”

That is of course a reference to Perry’s new single “Lifetimes,” which was inspired by her love for her daughter Daisy. The singer added that she has “grown up with” her fans, and that they’ve “leaned on each other” over the years.

Perry hasn’t announced any tour dates just yet, but she will be performing at Rock in Rio in September, as well as the VMAs — where she’ll be receiving the Video Vanguard Award.
