Former American Idol judge Katy Perry has been announced as the recipient of the Video Vanguard Award at this year’s MTV VMAs. Perry will accept the honorary award and perform at the ceremony in September.
Katy Perry Is This Year’s Video Vanguard at the VMAs
The Video Vanguard Award is a lifetime achievement award given out by the MTV Video Music Awards to one artist each year. Last year, the honor went to Shakira. This year, Katy Perry will receive the coveted award.
Perry will be presented the award at the VMAs ceremony on September 11. She’ll also be taking the stage to perform live at the event, which will air on MTV. In a social media post, the VMAs described it as the “performance of a lifetime.”
If past Vanguard performances are anything to go by, Perry will probably be singing popular tracks from throughout her career. She’ll also probably include at least one song from her most recent era, as her new album 143 is set to be released on September 20.

Perry Previously Won Video of the Year
Perry won Video of the Year at the VMAs in 2011 for her hit song “Firework.” As Billboard points out, she is the 10th artist to win both Video of the Year and Video Vanguard. (Others include Madonna, Britney Spears, and Beyoncé.)
The outlet also reports that Perry, who hosted the VMAs in 2017, is the first person to both host the show and receive the two top awards over the course of her career. Also notable is that Perry is the seventh female Video Vanguard recipient in a row.
