Former The Voice Mega Mentor Ed Sheeran has announced that he’s releasing a new album soon called Subtract. The news came with a heartfelt message from the singer, as he looked back on the difficult year that inspired his new music.

On Wednesday, Sheeran posted a video on Instagram in which he can be seen walking along a beach. In the sand, words are written that appear to be a tracklist of songs on the new album, which will be released May 5.

Sheeran also posted a photo of himself in a seaside house, writing in a journal. A closeup of the pages shows a message about the new album, which Sheeran also shared in the post’s caption. He revealed that he “had been working on Subtract for a decade” before the start of 2022.

It was at this point that “a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art.” Those events included his wife Cherry Seaborn being diagnosed with a tumor during pregnancy, as well as losing his best friend Jamal Edwards. Sheeran was also dealing with a copyright lawsuit over his music.

“I was spiraling through fear, depression and anxiety,” Sheeran wrote of how these events affected him. “I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air.”

Sheeran Turned to Music to Help Him Through

“Writing songs is my therapy,” Sheeran wrote in his new post. “It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts.”

Sheeran went on to describe the new album as “opening the trapdoor into my soul,” adding, “For the first time, I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life.”

The singer recently became more active on social media after being absent from his accounts for a while. He shared earlier this year that he had been dealing with some “turbulent things” in his personal life. Sheeran added that “things are looking up.”

You can pre-order and pre-save Sheeran’s upcoming new album Subtract on the singer’s website.
