American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta has released a new song called “Hell Together.” The deeply personal track was inspired by his mother’s powerful response to learning he had decided to step away from the Mormon church.

David Archuleta Releases New Song ‘Hell Together’

“Hell Together” was released this week. On Friday, the singer shared a video on social media in which he sings along to his new song in the car. In the post’s caption, he shared the emotional moment that inspired the song.

“I wrote this song based off what my mom told me a few days after I said I was stepping away from our church,” Archuleta wrote. “She said she was going to step away too and then said, ‘If you’re going to hell, we’re all going to hell with you.'”

Archuleta was raised Mormon, but he took a step away from the faith after coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in 2022. In his new post, the singer thanked his mom for “always loving and supporting me.”

“This song is dedicated to those who show unconditional love in a world where it’s so easy to judge things we don’t fully understand, the way my mom showed that love to me,” Archuleta wrote to close the post.

Archuleta Jokes About Being an Ex-Mormon

Ahead of the new song’s release, Archuleta posted a video joking about his experience as an ex-Mormon, saying things like, “Of course I’m experiencing things as an adult that most people experienced in junior high and high school.”

He also joked about being a lightweight when drinking alcohol, and not being able to handle a cup of coffee. Archuleta also talks about being “a 30-year-old virgin” and says it “feels freeing to be able to wear tank tops again.”

Archuleta received some backlash for the post in his comments from fans who felt like he was mocking their faith — even though he included a disclaimer saying that it wasn’t “meant as a diss to Mormons or the religion.”

He later posted his response to a message asking why he didn’t “walk away quietly,” writing, “Because I was told to be quiet for too long about my sexuality and I think it’s fair for me to tell my story and my truth.”
