Celebrating 13 Years of Iconic ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’ Looks and Extravagant Queens

Rupaul’s Drag Race is today celebrating its 13th anniversary. It is hard to believe that the global phenomena that has launched so many careers started back in 2009. From then to now, the show has gone on to create some of the best moments ever on reality TV. Drag Race has it all: fabulous guest judges, drama, and fashion. The drag competition show brought viewers into the world of Drag, and launched spin-off after spin-off.


It is hard to condense the epic moments from the show, but we are looking at some of the most iconic moments from over the years.

Latrice Royale vs. Monique Heart

Two popular contestants came back to compete on Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Latrice Royale and Monique Heart found themselves lip-syncing for their lives. The moment was more epic when they had to perform to Rupaul’s hit song, “Sissy That Walk.” Different color wigs came out of nowhere, outfit changes, and splits all made for one iconic battle.

Orange Gate

The fight that was heard around the drag world. Season 5 of Rupaul’s Drag Race offered up one of the most funny fights in the show’s history. Alyssa Edwards vs. Coco Montrese is still talked about among fans. The fight was pointless, and both queens came at each other to see who could be more shady. “Look how orange you look,” will forever be a highlight of the show.

Todrick Hall Takes The Stage

Hall was a choreographer and frequent guest judge on Rupaul’s Drag Race. In a promotion for his turn as Lola in the Broadway play, Kinky Boots, Hall took the stage to lip-sync for his life. The singer showed the queens how it was done, and why he is one of the best in the game.

Wrestling on the Catwalk

Season 3 contestant Mimi ImFurst learned that Drag is not a contact sport. During her lip-sync battle with India Ferrah, the queen lifted Ferrah on her shoulders. The cringe-worthy moment had audiences puzzled, but the judges were not pleased. Mimi was sent home.

Aja Makes Rupaul’s Jaw Drop

During a performance, Aja made Rupaul’s jaw drop as she did a death drop off of a block. The moment was the climax to her performance. The audience went wild. Contestants were all shook. In the end, Aja received her props for performing such a daring move.

Drag Queens Know Their Limits

Fans were used to the queens delivering splits throughout their lip-syncing performances. The move usually gets the attention of the judges, and made for a great finish. In Season 10, Monét X Change had other plans. Her Fake-out split had the judges acknowledge her comedy. The queen knew her limits.

A New Wig Reveal

Sasha Velour changed the way that viewers looked at wig reveals. During her Season 9 finale lip-sync performance, the queen removed a wig to reveal her shaved head, as rose petals fell from underneath the wig. Fans went wild and Sasha went on to win Season 9.

Rupaul, The Queen of Drag

The icon, RuPaul showed the viewers why she still holds the queen of drag crown. The trailblazer took to the stage to perform her single, “New Friends Silver, Old Friends Gold,” during the Season 13 grand finale. The performance was a spectacle fit for a queen.

With so many new Drag Race series coming out this year, fans can anticipate so many more iconic moments soon. From RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Vs. the World to RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 14, both airing now, there is no shortage of amazing drag moments to watch and celebrate these days.
