New American Idol judge Carrie Underwood appeared at President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday to perform “America the Beautiful.” Due to technical issues, Underwood had to sing a cappella.
Carrie Underwood Sings at Trump’s Inauguration
Due to freezing temperatures in Washington, D.C., Monday’s inauguration ceremony was moved indoors to the Capitol rotunda. Underwood was originally scheduled to sing before President Trump’s swearing-in speech, but her performance was delayed until afterward.
Additionally, an apparent technical issue stopped the background music from playing, so Underwood performed a cappella. According to People, Underwood asked those present to help her sing the song, telling them, “You know the words.”
Several attendees, including departing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, could be seen joining in as Underwood belted out the lyrics. After her performance, Underwood received a round of applause from the attendees. She shook hands with both President Biden and President Trump, as well as Vice President J.D. Vance.

Was Underwood Upset About the Performance?
A source told the Daily Mail that Underwood was “dissatisfied with her performance” at Monday’s inauguration, adding that the tighter quarters in the Capitol rotunda “left her feeling cramped and uncomfortable.”
“Her anxiety was high throughout the performance, and she felt that she was not afforded the same level of respect or admiration that previous performers, such as Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, had received,” the source continued. “She felt as if she was ushered in and out and had a mini hissy fit afterwards.”
The source explained that Underwood is “used to playing at massive venues with a stage to herself,” adding that the environment for her performance “threw off the acoustics.” However, a second source said Underwood was still “proud of herself” for saving the performance “from being a total disaster.”
