According to a new report, the crew of American Idol is happy that Carrie Underwood has joined the show as a new judge. A source claims that they prefer Underwood to former judge Katy Perry, whose presence was “chaotic and stormy.”
American Idol Crew Prefers Carrie Underwood to Katy Perry
A source told The Sun that former winner Underwood has been a “godsend” for the show. They explained, “I hate to sound so cheesy but actually it’s like is a ray of sunshine after a chaotic and stormy few years with some of the on-camera talent.”
That seems to be a dig at Katy Perry, who appeared on the show as a judge for seven seasons. Her time at the judging table wasn’t without controversy, as many fans called for her to be fired. She announced her departure from the show earlier this year. Underwood was later announced as her replacement.
“To put it bluntly, everyone in the crew, the studio suits, all the producers – really everyone is much happier and more comfortable now with Carrie on the panel,” the source shared. “Katy never fully fit in, there was something always off about her dynamic with the rest of the Idol team. There was also an unpredictability factor there that did not sit right with people.”
They called Underwood “very professional and a natural,” adding that “everyone who works on the show 100% prefers working with Carrie to Katy.” They said Underwood is “a combination of Paula [Abdul] and Simon [Cowell].”

The New Season Premieres in March
American Idol has been promoting Season 23 of the show as an emotional return for Underwood, who won Season 4 of the show in 2005. Twenty years later, she’s back to sit at the judges’ table, alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
The new season will premiere Sunday, March 9, on ABC, and streaming on Hulu. Ryan Seacrest will also be back to host his 23rd season of the show. Filming for the new competition began earlier this year, as the judges watched auditions from hopeful singers.
Before the new season premieres, Underwood is set to take the stage in Times Square to ring in 2025 on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, also hosted by Seacrest. This is Underwood’s third time performing on the New Year’s Eve special, which airs on ABC.
