‘American Idol’ Star Fritz Hager Releases New Single ‘Caroline’

American Idol Season 20 star Fritz Hager has released his first new single since the show. The tongue-in-cheek song, called “Caroline,” is about the aftermath of a one-night stand, as the narrator tries to remember the woman’s name.

Hager sets the scene by singing that he “woke up to a different ceiling.” He tells the song’s subject that she can keep his shirt and “wear it like a secret.” In case you were wondering, a press release for the new single makes sure to share that this is “a fictitious tale.”
Later in the song, Hager sings, “Thought I caught your name but I don’t remember it / Did you say Caroline?” The chorus is backed by drums and electric guitar, showing off an edgier sound than Idol fans might expect from the singer.
Hager co-wrote the new song with Drew Pearson, as well as fellow Idol alum Francisco Martin. Thursday’s song release came with a lyric video that features drawings of the main character, modeled after Hager himself.

Hager Compares the Song to a Sitcom
“With my first single after Idol, I felt like I had an opportunity to experiment and fine tune my sound,” Hager shared in a press release. “I think that ‘Caroline’ is a culmination of that. Whenever I write I try to play with the relationship between comedy and tragedy and figure out the best balance for each song.”
Hager describes the new track as “a sitcom cold open put to music.” He acknowledged, “In real life, this guy is an a**hole for sure, but in a sitcom, the audience is rooting for him. I think that this song achieves the same thing.”
The singer reached the Top 5 of Idol Season 20. As part of his time on the show, Hager released an original single called “Hearts Align,” which he later performed as the winner of Live with Kelly and Ryan‘s Encore contest.
Since his time on the show, Hager has performed with his friend and fellow Idol contestant Leah Marlene, as well as former winner Maddie Poppe. He also performed with other Idol alums on the Don’t Blink Tour last year.
