‘American Idol’ is Coming Back for Season 3…but is Katy Perry?
Reading Time: 2 minutes
It’s official: American Idol will be back for its third season on ABC, and its 18th overall! We’re very glad to have confirmation on the show’s return…but now we’d like some confirmation on the judging lineup!
While ratings for Season 2 have been pretty good, Variety has reported the show’s budget may be reduced going forward, as it is for many long-term television programs. According to the outlet, ABC has been in discussions with Fremantle, the company who owns American Idol, and has told them the show’s cost structure needs to be brought down.
One of the most prominent issues said to fall under this category is the paychecks of the judges, especially Katy Perry, whose deal with the show up to this point has been $25 million per season. If the budget cuts mean they’re no longer able to pay her that much, will she walk? And how would that affect the show as a whole?
Personally, while Katy’s wacky personality and outfits certainly add to the show, I don’t think her presence is a make-or-break factor to Idol‘s success. Maybe at first she was good for drawing viewers in to watch the reboot, but it seems that people have stuck around for the contestants, not so much her. I’m sure if Katy were to reject an offer for Season 3, they could easily find a suitable replacement for her.
Who do you think would make a good replacement for Katy if she doesn’t end up returning to American Idol? Let us know in the comments below!
