We can all agree that the year 2020 was full of ups and downs. Now more than ever before, celebrities are getting canceled for a multitude of things that happened in the past or the present. It has brought toxic cancel culture into question and has left many wondering if they can really overcome their past mistakes. Let’s take a look at all the list of canceled celebrities in 2020.

Ellen DeGeneres Canceled

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was the subject of multiple employee complaints that paint the work environment of The Ellen Show to be toxic. Employees accused the 62-year-old of turning a blind eye to sexual misconduct by top-level producers and racism backstage. Ellen who always encourages her audience to “be kind,” was said to be anything but by her current and former employees. After Warner Media conducted an investigation and found some of the claims to be true, she apologized to her staffers in an email. But, the damage is already done and Twitter deemed her as “canceled.”

Lea Michele Canceled

Glee star Lea Michele came under fire after her former co-star Samatha Marie Ware came forward to say that she used “traumatic microaggressions” on set. “LMAO remember when you made my first television gig a living hell?!?! Cause I’ll never forget. I believe you told everyone that if you had the opportunity you would ‘sh*t in my wig!’ Amongst other traumatic micro-aggressions that made me question a career in Hollywood…” Samantha wrote on social media. This inspired others to step forward and talk about Lea’s behavior on set. Lea put out an apology for “how my behavior towards fellow cast members was perceived by them.” This apology is not good enough for many who canceled her.

Shane Dawson Canceled

YouTuber Shane Dawson was canceled for a multitude of reasons in 2020. He was accused of manipulating YouTuber Tati to call James Charles a “sexual predator.” He along with Jeffree star were apparently looking to tarnish James’s career. Longtime subscribers of Shane called him out for making racist and offensive jokes and portraying a character while wearing blackface. He put out an apology but old tweets resurfaced that landed him in even more trouble for making inappropriate comments about minors.

Jimmy Kimmel Canceled

Jimmy Kimmel, host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! was called out in 2020 for doing several comedy sketches wearing blackface to pose as black celebrities in the 90s. His spokesperson put out an apology that particularly mentions that Jimmy wore blackface to impersonate NBA star Karl Malone on KROQ Radio but “never considered that this might be seen as anything other than an imitation of a fellow human being, one that had no more to do with Karl’s skin color than it did his bulging muscles and bald head.” He also admitted to saying a racial slur in 2013 while impersonating Snoop Dogg. Some people even called for him to be removed from ABC.

Lana Del Rey Canceled

Singer Lana Del Rey took to social media to defend herself against claims of “glorifying abuse” in her music. In the process of doing so, she name dropped a bunch of other female artists, most who are women of color. She basically said that those women sing about the same things as her but aren’t “crucified” for it. Lana was dragged on social media for calling out these artists and put out a video to clarify what she meant. After the video, people were more confused than ever before. She said she did not want to turn her “advocacy for fragility in the feminist movement into a race war.” Many canceled her after questioning whether she was racist or misinformed about the Black Lives Mattter Movement.

Jimmy Fallon Canceled

Much like Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon was also called out in 2020 for wearing blackface. In an SNL sketch filmed in 2000, Jimmy did a sketch impersonating Chris Rock wearing blackface. Twitter led a furious campaign to ‘cancel’ the comedian and TV host. They even got #jimmyfallonisoverparty trending. “I am very sorry for making this unquestionably offensive decision and thank all of you for holding me accountable,” he tweeted after he was called out. While he landed on the list of canceled celebrities, he is still hosting his show on television.

Doja Cat Canceled

Singer Doja Cat was canceled in a #dojacatisoverparty thread that was trending non-stop. Old music resurfaced where the singer used an offensive racist term. It only led to fans to uncover her past racist anti-blackness comments on social media and in chat rooms. She also put out a tweet in the past saying that her life would be so much easier if she was fully white. Doja tweeted a homophobic slur directed towards rapper Tyler The Creator in 2018. In a since-deleted statement, she said that she has used that slur at least 15,000 times in her life. She put out a public apology saying she would rewrite the offensive song and said she always had people coming at her on chat rooms.

Vanessa Hudgens Canceled

High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens posted a video about coronavirus deaths that ultimately got her canceled. “Even if everybody gets it, like, yeah, people are going to die, which is terrible, but like, inevitable?” she said in the video. This did not go over well with her viewers. In a video posted on Instagram, Vanessa said that she thinks her comments were “taken out of context” and that she is in lockdown and hopes everyone around her is doing the same. She also tweeted an apology where she realized her words were “insensitive.” Some of her fans are still not convinced that she truly understands just how harsh her words were in a time where people are losing their lives.

Jeffree Star Canceled

Jeffree Star along with his friend Shane Dawson were both canceled in 2020. As previously mentioned, he was one of the youtubers accused of trying to get Tati to tarnish James Charles’s career. In the past, he has been caught on camera saying racial slurs towards the black and Spanish communities. Tab, one of Jeffree’s friends of 13 years made a YouTube video saying that during a trip to Las Vegas, the makeup mogul made racist, derogatory and offensive comments. Another scandal Jeffree has been involved in is an image resurfacing from 2004. In the image, he is sitting with a swastica image behind him and the words “lipstick nazi” on the bottom.

J.K. Rowling Canceled

Author J.K. Rowling tweeted an article with a comment that many found to be anti-trans called “Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate.” She wrote “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” This tweet did in fact make it seem like she thinks that only women can menstruate. However, people were quick to point out that transgender, non-binary and gender-nonconforming people can menstruate. She spoke out once more but it only added more fuel to the fire and left J.K. Rowling rounding out the list of canceled celebrities.
