Sofia Vergara Opens Up About Ellen DeGeneres Making Fun Of Her English

An old clip from The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been going viral online. Host Ellen DeGeneres said some very controversial things to Sofia Vergara in an interview took place in 2017. It featured a few moments dedicated to Sofia’s accent that had everyone shaking their heads. But now, Sofia has spoken out about it saying that she did not take it too seriously.

Sofia Vergara Is Not Offended By Ellen DeGeneres Making Fun Of Accent

After talking about her second anniversary with husband Joe Manganiello, Sofia looked a little irritated with Ellen’s next segment on the talk show. Ellen said that she is trying to learn one Spanish word a day. She would in turn teach the America’s Got Talent judge an English word. Sofia went along with it but said “Ok, I know English.” The word was “flabbergasted” which Sofia has said before. Ellen then tried to get Sofia to say “discombobulated.” Sofia struggled to say it and then said “that’s not even a word, you’re just doing it to ruin my reputation.” The video now has over 12 million views and went viral on Twitter over the past few week. People began labeling Ellen as “racist” on social media.

Now Sofia is setting the record straight in a tweet. “Two comedians having fun with each other to entertain. I was never a victim guys, I was always in on the joke,” she wrote. Ellen is notoriously known for poking fun at her guests. This time it definitely struck a nerve with viewers of the show and fans of Sofia. One Twitter user said “I understand that Sofia Vergara tweeted that she was ‘in on the joke’ with Ellen making fun of her English but I don’t think that’s the reason everyone was mad. It’s the way white people, who only speak one language, have the audacity to mock POC about their accent.”

What Is The Future Of Ellen’s Show?

Earlier this month, Ellen sent a memo to her staffers after they had complained that they faced intimidation and racism behind the scenes of the show. “On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness — no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect,” the memo said. “As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t. That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.” But people felt like she was not taking accountability for what went on behind-the-scenes and instead blaming it all on the producers. These resurfaced clips with the America’s Got Talent judge are not helping her case.

Three top-level producers have since been fired from the show. Ellen also said the show will be coming back to television next month and it will be the best season yet. Initially, it was reported that Ellen would be stepping away from the show with James Corden eyeing her hosting spot. But it looks like for now Ellen is here to stay and hoping to make major changes on her show.
