Recent Social Media Posts Have People Questioning If Lana Del Rey Is Racist Or Misinformed About Black Lives Matter
After coming under fire for an Instagram post calling out other women in the music industry, Lana Del Rey is in the spotlight yet again. This time, she posted videos of protesters in Los Angeles fighting for justice over the death of George Floyd. But these videos may have done more harm than good. Is Lana purposefully trying to denounce the black community or is she merely just misinformed?
Lana Del Rey Posted Protesters Faces On Instagram
Lana posted a video of a Black Lives Matter protester standing on top of a cop car that had been burned and graffitied. This sparked outrage because people are saying she should not post anything with protesters’ faces in it. They do not want to become targets of police brutality nor do they want to be exposed on a social media platform from a celebrity that has 16.5 million followers. Everyone has the right to protest and should do so without fearing for their anonymity or safety through photos and videos. She also posted a video of looters going through several stores. Again, this video very clearly showed people’s faces which caused a ton of concern for advocates and supporters of Black Lives Matter. Getting more people who are fighting for change arrested is never the goal.
Singer Kehlani, a huge advocate of Black Lives Matter immediately addressed Lana’s post. She tweeted “Please remove your Instagram post it’s dangerous as f*ck and a very poor choice of moments to post. By all means protest, but DO NOT endanger people with your massive platform. Oh and turn your fucking comments on man.” Singer Tinashe also tweeted to Lana asking “Why the f*ck are you posting people looting stores on your page literally WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM.” This sparked Lana to remove the looting video from her Instagram, however, she did keep up the video of the man standing on the car.
She Already Made Waves With Her Statement That Some Called Racist
After posting a lengthy controversial statement involving women of color, this is definitely not the kind of controversy Lana needs right now. Kehlani was one of the singers that Lana ironically called out in this rant about fragility in the feminist movement. She felt like other artists sang about the same things as her and did not receive as much backlash. Calling out artists like Beyonce, Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj did not go over well with her followers. Her point to be made was that promiscuity and singing about sex, relationships and abuse should be considered art for each artist that does it, not just one artist. But people genuinely just felt like calling out women of color was distasteful and completely wrong.
Just when people thought Lana learned her lesson, she posted a black and white photo of a crowd of protesters. Some faces can be made out in the crowd and people were not too happy about this. Lana had comments turned off on most of her posts but it seems like after Kehlani tweeted her to turn her comments on she listened. This post is full of comments from people telling her to take it down or blur out the faces of protesters. One comment on the post said “AGAIN STOP POSTING FACES” while another said, “GIRL WHY ARENT YOU COVERING THE FACES OF THE PROTESTERS :/.”
Has Lana really been educated enough about systemic racism to follow suit and delete these pictures? Other followers of hers felt like posting these photos isn’t enough to help seek justice for the black community. We have seen other celebrities donating to bail protesters out of jail or to black charities but Lana is seemingly just posting the wrong things at the wrong time.
One Post, In Particular, Has People Questioning If Lana Really Does Support Black Lives Matter
Lana seems to think that one piece of the Floyd case that needs to be emphasized is that Floyd and his murderer, police officer Derek Chauvin worked at the same night club. This post set people off because instead of focusing on this part of the case, they feel like she should be using her voice to urge people to donate or educate themselves with anti-racism resources.
Perhaps the biggest piece of irony in all this is that Lana’s most recent boyfriend is a white cop. When asked in the past if she was nervous about dating a cop she said “Well, the thing is, he’s a good cop.” This is something that has been talked about all over social media about this idea of “good cops.” Cops, the ones that are in charge of protecting the citizens should all be good decent human beings. Lana of all people should know this after dating one and seeing that police brutality is alive and well all over the country. Clearly, not all cops are good people and this is why people protest and this is why so many black lives have been taken at the hands of these “bad cops.”
Lana might actually have good intentions but is not educated enough on Black Lives Matter nor the point of protests to effectively speak out on the matter. She has denied being racist in a recent Instagram video but it truly is her actions that constantly have people wondering how she can use her massive platform to create real change instead of causing controversy surrounding racism.
