Gwen Stefani Says Blake Shelton No Longer Writes Songs With Her
Gwen appeared on DJ Khaled’s podcast called The First One to reflect on her music career that spans over two decades. “When you’re on your own [but used to] collaborate [ing] and writing with a bunch of different people, you kind of feel like you need someone to do that with,” the 51-year-old confesses.
“Yesterday, Blake and I sat down and listened to, like, every song — which is a lot of songs — and just put our favorite stars by which ones. We definitely bounce off each other” she adds.

Gwen just released her song “Slow Clap” a reggae-inspired tune reminiscent of her early No Doubt days. One thing that matters to her the most when releasing new music is Blake’s opinion. After Blake has been on The Voice for all 20 seasons, Gwen trusts his music expertise. “I really rely on him a lot for what his taste is,” she says.
“He knows all genres from being on that show, you know what I’m saying? He has a really good ear for hits or just songs that are just the ones that we all like,” she says. “So I definitely lean on him a lot.”
Blake and Gwen met on The Voice and began dating in 2015. They truly have had such an incredible love story from leaning on each other during their divorces to supporting each other’s music careers. How Does Blake Feel About Songwriting?
Gwen obviously regards Blake’s opinion very highly when it comes to her music. However, he no longer helps her write songs anymore. “I wish he would write with me, but he doesn’t really write anymore,” Gwen says. “We’ve actually written three songs together — we wrote a Christmas song together, and then we wrote two other songs.”
Blake and Gwen have written some smash hit songs together including “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” and “You Make It Feel Like Christmas.”
“But he just doesn’t like writing that much,” she says through laughter. “It makes me so mad.” While Blake has co-written quite a few of his own songs, he definitely considers himself to be more of a singer than a songwriter.
“I never really considered myself a great songwriter, and the reason is because there’s so many incredible songwriters in Nashville that I can’t even begin to compare my songs to the work that they put out […]” he said in an interview.
