Kelly Osbourne Appears on Dax Shepard’s Podcast to Discuss Sobriety
Last month, Kelly Osbourne revealed in a string of Instagram stories that she relapsed on her alcoholism.
On May 4, she joined actor Dax Shepard on the latest episode of his podcast, Armchair Expert. They discussed her difficulties staying sober during the coronavirus pandemic, their past struggles with addiction and what drew them both to relapse. After 16 long years of sobriety, Shepard recently relapsed after he took prescription pain pills following surgery after a motorcycle accident.
The conversation was very insightful.
Osbourne says that when the world shut down during the Covid-19 pandemic, she found it difficult to continue with her Alcoholics Anonymous [AA] meetings. Like many, she didn’t like attending online meetings. She stated that in-person meetings “meant everything” to her and helped her figure out who she was, but she “got nothing out of” Zoom AA meetings.
Without that connection, she grew angry, resentful and eventually quit the program.
During the early months of quarantine, Zoom Happy Hours seemed like an everyday event. Osbourne was proud that she made it “all the way through the worst part of the lockdown” without an alcoholic drink.
The host convinced herself she was no longer an addict, and thus allowed herself to have one glass of champagne one day. It was a gateway that led her down a spiral.
“It wasn’t until I found myself last weekend covered in ranch dressing by my friend’s pool sunburnt, looking like a piece of shit, that I was like, ‘Maybe I don’t have this under control,” Osbourne said.
